Pope meets Fidel

HAVANA, Cuba (AFP) — Pope Francis met with Fidel Castro on Sunday at the 89-year-old Cuban revolutionary leader's home in Havana, said Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi. The two chatted for around 30 or 40 minutes in "a very informal and friendly environment" along with Castro's wife, children and grandchildren and a small delegation from the Vatican, Lombardi said. Francis gave the former Cuban leader four books, including two on theology. Castro reciprocated with a dedicated copy of Brazilian priest Frei Betto's book of interviews with him, "Fidel and Religion," which he signed: "With admiration and respect from the Cuban people." Francis was also due to meet Castro's brother Raul, who took the reins in Cuba when Fidel stepped down amid a health crisis in 2006. Fidel Castro had previously met pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 1996 and on three occasions when he visited Cuba in 1998. He also met pope Benedict XVI when he visited Cuba in 2012. MOSCOW (AP) — A radio engineer who once worked for the Russian military intelligence has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for sending a job cover letter to a Swedish company. Gennady Kravtsov worked for Russia's GRU from 1990 to 2005 as a radio engineer in satellite intelligence. For five years after he quit, he was barred from taking certain security jobs because of the sensitive nature of the work. When that period was up, he sent an employment cover letter to a Swedish company he had found online. Prosecutors claimed Kravtsov revealed his job description as well as information about the military capability of running an out-of-date radio surveillance system. The Moscow City Court on Monday found Kravtsov guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in a high-security prison. Tropical Storm Ida

MIAMI, United States (AFP) – Tropical storm Ida has gained strength in the Atlantic and is expected to grow to hurricane force but is too far at sea to pose a threat to land, US weather forecasters said Monday. Ida's centre was 1,035 miles (1,670 kilometres) east of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said in its 0900 GMT bulletin. Moving in a northerly direction with 50 miles (85 kilometres) an hour winds, the storm could reach hurricane strength by the end of the week on a track far from populated areas. Ida is the ninth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began in June and ends in November. So far this season only two storms have become hurricanes, but the most destructive – tropical storm Erika – left about 30 dead in the tiny island of Dominica. September is typically the peak of the hurricane season. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted a less active hurricane season than usual because of the El Nino phenomenon, which inhibits storm formation.
